About Loretto School

Our changing world is full of challenges and opportunities for young people. Finding a school that can provide a more rounded education to fully prepare them for what lies ahead is vital.

Loretto is that school.

Founded in 1827, and located in a spacious campus just outside Edinburgh, we are one of Scotland’s leading independent co-educational schools, for both boarding and day school pupils. Traditional and innovative educational methods, first-class facilities and the advantages offered by a smaller school all combine to provide a uniquely rounded learning experience for boys and girls. That rounded approach is really what sets us apart. From day one, Loretto’s founders were dedicated to blending academic excellence with a wealth of experiences beyond the classroom.

By helping boys and girls to excel in mind, body and spirit, we aim to help them unlock and fully realise their true potential. Today’s staff and pupils are living proof of the clear benefits offered by that ethos. Or to put it another way, while we may be a small school, our big heart and ambition offer big opportunities.

Also reflecting Loretto’s commitment to help bring out the best in all, are our high standards of teaching and a diverse yet rigorous curriculum.

The enormous range of activities we offer away from the classroom ensures that each pupil can grow and develop wherever their interests and talents may lie. The School’s achievements in music, art and drama and our outstanding reputation in sporting endeavours – rugby, hockey, cricket, lacrosse and golf to name just a few – are both testament to that.

Scholarships & Bursaries

A Scholarship or Exhibition is recognition of exceptional ability and promise and is usually accompanied by a financial reward. Scholarships and Exhibitions are awarded on the basis of merit and can be worth up to 10% of the fees (boarding or day). A Scholarship is worth 10% of the fees and an Exhibition is worth 5% of the fees. The number and size of Scholarships and Exhibitions is at the discretion of the Headmaster. In case of need, Loretto will consider applications to supplement the award with a means-tested bursary.

Means-tested Bursaries form the major part of fee assistance offered by Loretto. Bursaries are limited and are intended to help those pupils likely to gain from an education at Loretto and who will contribute well to the life of the school, but whose parents cannot afford the full fees. Our bursary approach is one of moving forward in partnership and openness between the family and Loretto. As of January 2014 up to 105% of fees are available as a bursary. Applications for substantial funding are decided in January of each year. To ensure applications are considered they should be made to the school by the end of the previous year's autumn term.

Admissions Process

Loretto School’s Admissions procedure aims to ensure that boys and girls who join Loretto are able to be happy, successful and secure within its academic, cultural and pastoral environment, whether they are boarders or day pupils.

Applications are accepted for entry into most years in the School except Upper Sixth (Year 13).
