About Bedford School

Bedford School is an independent boarding and day school for boys aged 7 to 18 years, where fundamental traditions combine with innovative educational thinking. In addition to an established reputation for academic excellence, we are renowned for our strengths in music, the arts and sport. Situated on an extensive parkland estate of 40 acres in the heart of Bedford, the school is a lively community of day boys, weekly and full boarders. Our highly qualified teaching staff are selected on their ability to communicate and inspire. The result is a vibrant, stimulating environment, were boys can be happy, grow in self-confidence, thrive academically and make the most of the wide range of opportunities on offer. Our broad curriculum offers boys a varied choice of subjects, and our academic success is demonstrated by a long history of impressive examination results at GCSE, A level, and in the International Baccalaureate Diploma. We also offer an impressive range of extracurricular activities with over 80 clubs and societies. Our Music School is one of the largest in the country and has a full programme of concerts and performances throughout the year. Facilities are virtually unrivalled and include a recreation centre with theatre, large sports hall, squash courts, fitness centre and a 25-metre indoor swimming pool; twin Astroturf pitches; an observatory and planetarium and an impressive library. We offer a generous Scholarship & Bursary Scheme for talented boys, irrespective of background. We warmly invite you to join us at one of our Open Mornings or for a private visit to see the school in action, meet the boys and staff, and get a flavour of life at Bedford School. Scholarships & Bursaries

Scholarships are awarded in five major categories to current boys and external candidates as they enter Year 9 (13+), and to external candidates only at Year 12 (16+),

Scholarships are awarded to boys who excel academically, or show outstanding talent in Art, Drama, Music or Sport.

Up to 20 Scholars will receive up to a maximum of 10% of annual school fees from The Harpur Trust.

Up to 18 of these Scholars will receive up to a further 25% of annual school fees if they demonstrate exceptional talent. This additional funding, from the Brian Saville and Prof. John Roach Scholarship Funds, gives a total award of up to 35% of annual school fees.

Any amount required beyond this will be awarded on a means tested basis through our Bursary scheme.

Admissions Process

The entrance procedure for the Upper School is held during the Spring Term. We are able to consider assessing boys for entry to the School at any stage of the year, provided that we have places available. However, we are unable to award Scholarships or Bursaries outside of the stated timeframe.

Year 9 (13+)

Candidates applying to the Upper School are required to sit ‘The Bedford School Aptitude Test (BSAT)’ which will provide the school with information on a student’s underlying ability and potential. It is not a test of knowledge but is designed to identify a student’s intelligence, processing capacity and working memory. The test is taken online at the school.

We also have additional tests to examine candidates' foundational knowledge in the key subject areas of Mathematics and English. Boys will also be considered at the same time for the Scholarship and Bursary Awards. Boys who have applied for Music,Sports, Art or Drama Scholarships will be required to attend a separate day. Boys who have applied for an Academic Scholarship may be called back on a separate day following their assessment test.

Year 12 (16+)

Candidates are invited for an assessment day in the January before entry.  They sit a Verbal Reasoning paper and have an interview with a senior member of staff.  The school will also take up a reference from their current school and will consider their application along with their predicted grades at GCSE.

For both A Level and IB a minimum of C grades are required in Maths and English.

For A Level, boys need minimum of grade B in their chosen four AS subjects. The exception to this concerns boys wishing to study Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths at AS, who will need to have achieved a minimum of an A/AA grade at GCSE/IGCSE and boys studying the IGCSE Double Award Science specification wishing to pursue a Science A-level will need a minimum of an AA in Science in order to study the subject at A-level.

For IB, boys need to achieve a minimum of B grades at GCSE/IGCSE for their chosen Higher Level subjects, and a minimum grade profile at GCSE/IGCSE of BCC for their chosen Standard Level subjects. The exception to this concerns boys wishing to study HL Physics, Chemistry and Biology who are required to get a minimum A grade at GCSE/IGCSE (or AA grade if studying Double Award Science); those who wish to study Higher Level Maths are required to get an A* at GCSE/IGCSE , and those wishing to study Standard Level Maths are required to get a minimum of an A/AA grade at GCSE/IGCSE.
