Millfield School is a centre of excellence for academic study, sport and the arts that believes in providing a fully rounded education for our students. By providing young people with diverse experiences and opportunities, we not only help build their confidence and maturity, but enable them to grow into thoughtful, flexible and resilient young adults capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century. We believe that every child has the right to achieve their potential. That’s why we work hard to create a learning and social environment in which they are supported to overcome their weaknesses, encouraged to make the most of their strengths and individually nurtured so they can flourish.

Scholarships & Bursaries

Scholarships are available for entry into Year 9 or the Lower Sixth.

For those entering Year 9, 13+ assessments will usually take place in the academic year preceding the year of entry. Academic, All-Rounder, Art, Chess, Music and Sport awards are available. Applications are also welcome from good all-rounders; boys and girls who have reached a good standard academically and who show promise in other specific areas including Art, Drama, Music or Sport.

The Nine at Millfield Academic Scholarship is a highly valued award which will provide up to 50% fee remission. These scholarships will be awarded to pupils of outstanding academic merit, who will bring distinction and commitment to the academic life of Millfield and have strengths in one or more co-curricular areas. This can be demonstrated by a sufficiently high standard in Art, Drama, Music or Sport. We will be looking for candidates who demonstrate outstanding intellect, character, leadership and commitment.

For those entering Lower Sixth, 16+ assessments will usually take place in the academic year preceding the year of entry with the majority in November. Academic, All-Rounder, Art, Chess, Music and Sport awards are available. Applications are also welcome from good all-rounders; boys and girls who have reached a good standard academically and who show promise in other specific areas including Art, Drama, Music or Sport.

Scholarships may be honorary or carry a fee reduction of up to 15%. If a scholarship has been awarded, parents in genuine financial need can also apply for a means-tested bursary. A small number of Headmaster's Awards may carry reductions in excess of 15% in recognition of exceptional excellence in a particular area or areas.

Scholarship assessments take place in the academic year preceding entry and are open to pupils who have an excellent school report and recommendation from their headteacher. Candidates should be under 13 years of age on the 1 September if they are applying for a 13+ Scholarship.

Admissions Process

13+ and 14+ Entry

Our largest intake for pupils is at 13+ into Year 9 when we welcome 200 new pupils to the school. There are also spaces for about 35 pupils per year to join our Year 10. Our Nine at Millfield programme has been specifically designed to meet the academic and developmental needs of 13-14 year olds, to ensure they make the successful transition from a prep or junior school to the next stage of their schooling at Millfield.

16+ entry

At Lower Sixth level we admit around 130 new pupils each year. We have a very wide range of academic subjects available for study at Sixth Form, with small class sizes and expert careers and higher education advice.
