About Sandroyd School

Childhood should be relished, enjoyed and remembered fondly. That’s why pastoral care is absolutely central to everything that we do at Sandroyd – in both our Pre-Prep, the Walled Garden (for children aged 2-7), and in our Prep School (for children aged 7-13).  Our friendly and nurturing boarding environment equips children with the confidence and skills to really challenge themselves, to be happy, and to succeed. We are unequivocally proud of being a small school and the benefits it offers to all of our pupils. Our size creates a wonderfully unique family atmosphere, and it allows us to properly focus on the individual needs of each child at every stage of their education.  Indeed, teachers and pastoral staff meet every morning to discuss how to best support each pupil that day. It allows us to ensure that no child slips under the radar and everyone is challenged on a daily basis.

Sandroyd offers an academically rich and rigorous education that goes far beyond preparing pupils to just pass entrance exams to the country’s leading senior schools. We inspire interests and develop talents - both inside and beyond the classroom - from music, dance and drama, to a variety of sports (which pupils play every day).  Pupils are encouraged to develop the qualities and skills they’ll need for life beyond their school days. We explicitly teach pupils to reason and think, and our challenging ‘Thinking Friday’ questions encourage them to form and express their own opinions.

The result is that Sandroyd pupils really do stand out from the crowd. Don’t just take our word for it; we’re repeatedly told that our pupils are better prepared to successfully face the demands of senior school. Not just in their academic abilities, but, far more importantly, in the vital ‘soft skills’ of confidence, resilience and self-motivation.

All of this takes place in our idyllic rural location, set in 60 acres, on the Wiltshire/Dorset border.  There’s always time in the day for pupils to just play and enjoy their childhood – be it riding horses or riding bikes, playing with pets or paints – or perhaps adventuring in the playgrounds or in the woodlands!

Fees

All fees include accident insurance, regular medical fees, school laundry and a trip to France for children when they reach Year 7.

Scholarships & Bursaries

The School offers financial assistance in the form of bursaries. Bursaries are awarded to those families who would otherwise be unable to meet the full fees in order to send a child to Sandroyd. A number of factors are taken into account when awarding bursaries, including family income, the net value of assets in the family, and, if a successful application is made, the award is pegged according to these factors. One 100% bursary is available from Year 7 and is a joint award with Bryanston School enabling a pupil to receive private education from aged 11 to 18. Please see below for further details. There are also awards available for the sons and daughters of servicemen and women killed or wounded on operations.

Forms and conditions of bursaries are available from the Bursar. All bursaries are means tested. Any request for a bursary is forwarded to a committee comprising the Headmaster, the Bursar and one Governor. Bursaries are awarded on an annual basis and reviewed annually. Funds are limited and not every eligible applicant will be successful. On receipt of an application form for a bursary the child will be invited to the school for assessment and interview.

Admissions Process

Registration – Please complete a Registration Form and return it to the Admissions Registrar, together with the Registration Fee. Whilst this does not guarantee your child a place at the school, it adds them on our provisional lists and places them higher on the admissions list than those who have not registered.

Activity Morning – Children and their parents are invited to join us for our Activity Morning. Joining our current pupils, this is an opportunity for prospective pupils to experience some of the varied activities on offer and for parents to meet with the Headmaster and to tour the school with current Sandroydians.

Assessment – We academically assess all children before they start at Sandroyd. This is not a pass or fail test but enables us to gain a snapshot of their ability in the classroom. This is usually done on a set morning or afternoon but can be arranged at a time to suit the family.

Formal Offer – A formal offer of a place will be made once a child has been assessed. At this stage, a deposit is required to secure the offered place.

New Pupil Packs – In the term preceding entry, the new pupil packs will be sent out. This will include an invitation to the New Pupils’ Day, held in June each year, an occasion which brings together all our new pupils and their families with current staff and pupils for a talk, tours and a delicious BBQ.
