About Loretto Junior School

Loretto Junior School, affectionately known as ‘The Nippers’, is East Lothian’s leading independent Junior School for children aged 0–12 years – with around 200 boys and girls in attendance. We are predominantly a day school but every year we welcome a number of boarders who join us aged 11.

The Early Years (5–7 years) are based at Eskbank, while the Nippers (8–12 years) are at North Esk Lodge. The latter is the school’s busy hub for both day pupils and boarders, situated on a site close enough to the Senior School to share its facilities, but separate enough to allow its pupils to feel secure and happy in their own independent environment. The Loretto Nursery (0–5 years) is also located close by.

For pupils and teachers alike, Loretto is a truly special place. That is because it combines the best of both worlds. On the one hand, there is the closeness and friendliness of a small and friendly school; on the other, despite our modest size – we are a school that’s big on heart, big on ambition and big on opportunity. Echoing that unique combination of qualities is the School’s enviable location. While very close to Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, and enjoying all the advantages that offers, there is also a community feel to life here. We are a school that offers the space and opportunity for everyone to find their own route to success – whether in academic achievement, sport, art, music, drama or other activities.

Put simply, at Loretto, every individual matters – wherever their talents, interests and ambitions lie. That is not just a guiding ethos, it is a practical reality. The School’s size and campus enables

pupils to enjoy the freedom of their childhood within a safe and caring environment, while small classes allow all children the chance to discover and develop their talents, whilst receiving maximum individual attention.

While pupils are our priority, we do not forget the parents. Our aim is to be as flexible as possible to fit in with your busy schedules. To that end, we run convenient school minibus routes to and from the surrounding areas of North Berwick, Gullane, Haddington, Gifford, Earlston, Galashiels, Edinburgh and Roslin.

Scholarships & Bursaries

Bursaries
Means-tested Bursaries form the major part of fee assistance offered by Loretto. Bursaries are limited and are intended to help those pupils likely to gain from an education at Loretto and who will contribute well to the life of the school, but whose parents cannot afford the full fees. Our bursary approach is one of moving forward in partnership and openness between the family and Loretto. As of January 2014 up to 105% of fees are available as a bursary. Applications for substantial funding are decided in January of each year.

To ensure applications are considered they should be made to the school by the end of the previous year's autumn term.

Eligibility for Bursaries

There are normally three categories of Bursary applicants:

1. Parents of applicants whose children are not currently at Loretto, who wish to apply for financial assistance.
2. Parents of Sixth Form applicants for entry, who in the view of their school and of Loretto, would gain from two years at Loretto and contribute well to the life of the school, and need some assistance with the fees.
3. Parents whose child is already at Loretto and who have suffered an adverse change in their circumstances.
