Austin Friars Junior School offers a wide and varied curriculum, which encourages academic achievement alongside sporting, musical, cultural and creative development, thus allowing each child’s talents and potential to be fully pursued. The importance of good primary education cannot be over emphasised and the Junior School commits itself to this purpose. The teaching staff form a capable and highly motivated team totally dedicated to the aims and ethos of the School. Pupils benefit from specialist teaching in subjects such as ICT, music, drama, modern languages and sports and games. Learning support is an integral part of the curriculum for those who will benefit.
Academically, the school has a fine reputation within the City of Carlisle and beyond, with a record of many scholarship successes at age 11. Music, speech and drama have a high profile. Annually Junior 1 (Year 3) pupils are given a musical instrument to learn and enjoy specialist tuition. Juniors take LAMDA Verse and Prose Speaking Examination achieving consistently high grades. Good use is made of the extensive grounds surrounding the school, including Astroturf, providing ample scope for PE lessons as well as hosting matches against local school teams.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities is offered from 4.00-6.00pm, including history, chess, hockey, art, science, computing, young engineers, French, football and netball. Due to the expansion of pupil numbers, a new £3.1 million state-of-the-art Junior School was completed in February 2008.
The Junior School is a provider of Free Early Years Provision. The Early Years Foundation Stage Pre-School occupies a spacious detached two-storey house, adjacent to the main School. Set within its own mature grounds, Pre-School provides pupils with excellent facilities, including an interesting garden and all-weather safe play area. The secure building and grounds offer parents an opportunity to educate children within a natural and comfortable setting. The main aim of the Pre-School is to provide a caring and stimulating environment, endowing children with a positive attitude to learning which will serve them through their formative years. The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum covers the seven areas of learning. Through carefully-structured and well-planned, play-based activities pupils are encouraged to develop their own ideas and to learn sound spiritual and social values by being cooperative and aware of others. Pre-School pupils are taught to listen carefully, to make friends, share, take turns and be polite and to use good manners. Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

Entry into Kindergarten is by interview and a taster afternoon. Charitable Status. Austin Friars is a registered Charity, number 516289.
