About St John's College

The school as a whole comprises a Day Nursery, a Junior School, a Senior School, and a Sixth Form. Together with the boarding accommodation these are all located in the centre of Southsea. The facilities for teaching, learning, sports and other extra-curricular activities are of a very high standard. In addition, the school has 35 acres of games fields at Farlington on the city outskirts.

St John’s is a wide-ability school. All children who may benefit from its curriculum are very welcome. The emphasis is placed on maximising the potential of every child, whatever that may be. Pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, to aspire and to achieve. The excellent academic results gained at all levels speak for themselves. Specifically tailored and high quality support is available where pupils require some degree of assistance with their learning, or additional challenge.

St John’s enjoys an outstanding reputation for its caring community life. The school is big enough to offer a busy, varied and engaging educational experience in every sense, but still small enough for every member of the school to be known and valued just for who they are. Excellent pastoral care means that no known need goes unaddressed.

The resident boarding community provides a real sense of cohesion and continuity within the shared life of the school, and the diversity of background and experience the boarders bring enriches the experience of everyone.

Scholarships & Bursaries

Scholarships
Each year we are able to offer sport, art, music and academic scholarships to pupils starting in Year 7. These are awarded to students who perform extremely well in the entrance assessments and are worth up to 50% of the day fees.

Bursaries
We aim to support as many families qualifying for bursaries as possible. All bursaries are means tested and their value is related to the income and financial resources of the student's family. Awards can be worth up to 50% of the day fees, but are usually in the region of 10-20%.

Parents wishing to apply for scholarships or bursaries should apply in writing to Head. Further information is available from our Admissions Registar, Mrs Janet Mengham. Please email admissions@stjohnscollege.co.uk or telephone the school on 023 9281 5118.

Admissions Process

Choosing the right school is important and we want to do all we can to help you decide whether St John’s College, Southsea is right for your child.

Our website provides all the facts, but by visiting us and talking with students and staff you will get a real feel for the school and, if you’re still undecided, we will happily arrange a Taster Day for your son or daughter.

How to get in touch
1. Visit and registration
You are very welcome to visit the school, with or without your child(ren); at one of our open events or on an private tour. Visit our Open Morning page for further details.

2. Taster day
We are happy to offer your child a taster day / session so they can spend a normal school day with his or her current year group; in the case of prospective boarders this can include a sleepover. This gives them an excellent opportunity to meet their peers and teachers and to get a feel for our school.

3. Entrance Assessments
Any pupils wishing to join the College will be required to sit an entrance assessment:

Junior School
All pupils entering the Junior School are assessed usually during a Taster Day. This includes a short assessment of the child's levels of Literacy, Numeracy and Reading.

Year 7 & Year 9 Entry
Entrance assessments for pupils joining Year 7 and Year 9 take place in January and November of each year and include English, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is no fee for sitting the assessment but we would require each parent to complete and submit an application form for their child.

Sixth Form Entry
Students wishing to join our Sixth form from within the UK are not required to complete formal assessments, but are asked to complete an application form and to provide us with academic reports and predicted grades for their GCSE examinations.

Students applying from overseas will be asked to provide academic reports, references from their current school and to take a formal assessment in English and Maths.

4. Offer of a place
If the taster session and entrance assessment went well, a verbal offer will be made which will then be followed by a formal, written offer, subject to the receipt of satisfactory reports/references from the child’s current school.

5. Acceptance of a place
This is requested, in writing, together with a non-refundable deposit of £100 which is payable on acceptance of the place. This deposit it held in credit against the final fee account that is presented after a pupil leaves the school.
